O Broken Bridge, O Mastodon
2022, acrylic on canvas, 120cm x 90cm
Examining isolation and the path through which we can extract ourselves from despair, O Broken Bridge, O Mastodon serves as a visual pilgrimage through treacherous mountains and veins of gesso to a new light. An exploration is shape and form, and examining the painting as an object, O Broken Bridge, O Mastodon bridges the divide between painting and sculpture,
Lambda
2020, acrylic on canvas, 90cm x 60cm
Made in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lambda looks at half-life and decay, not only of the physical object, but the metaphysical self. After months of isolation and what felt like captivity, the process of painting Lambda was equally as important as the finished product itself; painted in one sitting over the course of one long night, Lambda was a confrontation with regression, struggle, and the laundry list of things we're able to avoid giving our attention to, provided we're kept otherwise occupied.
So Long As He Never Knows Himself (To Woo A Fleeting Phantom)
2020,diptych, acrylic and oil on canvas, 90cm x 60cm
An interpretation of the Narcissus myth as written by Ovid in Metamorphoses, So Long As He Never Knows Himself (To Woo A Fleeting Phantom) takes inspiration from Caravaggio's painting Narcissus, and John William Waterhouse's Echo and Narcissus. In this painting, however, Echo holds a mirror, offering Narcissus a clearer look at himself so that he may better learn to know and understand who he is and who he can be, though he still chooses to examine his reflection in the muddy, indiscernible ripples of the river before him. So Long As He Never Knows Himself (To Woo A Fleeting Phantom) is an examination of relationships, ego, and the ways we offer parts of ourselves to others until there is little left to call our own.
