Delible/Something Like Smoke

Memory is a malleable, slippery thing, an unreliable animal that shifts and changes the more you try to hold onto it. Our ability to remember has been rendered even less effective by the practice of offloading our memories; to photographs, to social media, to books. Delible is made from a series of polaroids I took of precious memories of my girlfriend and I; one-off images that, once destroyed, are lost, reduced to the basic shapes of the moments they represent. An exploration of memory decay and our role as the unreliable narrator, Delible serves as a reminder that as nice as it is to hold onto a moment, the proof after the fact is never as rich as the moment itself.
Nothing Tangible

Nothing Tangible was a continuation of the concepts that Delible was exploring; memory, the intangibility and unreliability of the things we see and remember, and the elusiveness of memories and the things we try to hold onto. Using both copperplate etching and screenprints, I made a varied edition of prints, each slightly different than the others, whether on different paper, with different colours of ink used, or with the registration slightly skewed, to examine the notion that the mind is an unreliable narrator, that the things we remember and believe to be true are not always, and that the things we feel, choose, and experience often serve only to obfuscate and obscure what is real.
Reclaim
2020, intaglio etching on Arches cold-pressed watercolour, 23cm x30cm
Reclaim is a small, closed edition of intaglio prints made to process grief, and spend time with a person I was no longer able to. Using line etching and aquatint, Reclaim is meant to show a gentle passing, a return to nature, and, concurrent with the translucent appearance of the details of the subject, illustrate the permanency of the imprint left on the lives of those left behind, with the thick, solid silhouette, and the detail of the plant life that grows around.
